Leucistic deer in Maryland - Photographed by S Hyde.

This image of a young white-tailed buck was sent to us from Maryland, USA, by Mrs S Hyde. The deer appears regularly in Mrs Hyde's back yard. The fact that the deer has a little colour and dark eyes means that he is definitely not an albino, as they have no pigment at all and pinkl eyes. This deer is leucistic.

Leucism (or Leukism)
Leucism is a very unusual condition whereby the pigmentation cells in an animal or bird fail to develop properly. This can result in unusual white patches appearing on the animal, or, more rarely, completely white creatures.

pied deer

What is the difference between a leucism deer and a pied or piebald deer? we have a very small whitetail deer hanging around our neighborhood in crossville, Tn. that is white with a lot of brown splotches. He or she is about the size of a goat. It also has an awkward gait when it runs and may be deaf or close to it as it doesn't spook like other deer. The hair on the hind quarters is quite long. I would post a pic but don't know how.

Maybe not

It could also just be a white White-tailed deer, like white tigers, lions, etc. i.e. it just means inbreeding.
