Coral Cay Conservation
Initially established in 1985 by its founder, Pete Raines MBE, Coral Cay successfully pioneered a ‘citizen science' approach by using international volunteers to help collect the scientific data needed to develop and implement effective grass-roots conservation solutions.
We are committed to involving local stakeholders so that the communities we work with can benefit directly from our conservation efforts. We rely on a ‘bottom-up' approach to conservation, with the belief that the only way to successfully preserve endangered ecosystems is by involving the local custodians throughout the process
Coral Cay Conservation was instrumental in the designation of the Belize Barrier Reef as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. Since this major breakthrough in marine conservation, Coral Cay has continued to work with host governments and NGO's to set up Marine Protected Areas around the world. Notable achievements include the Danjugan Marine Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary for Negros, Philippines and the on-going development of a network of community-led Marine Protected Areas in Southern Leyte, Philippines.
