The Hare Preservation Trust

The Hare Preservation Trust (HPT), run entirely by volunteers, works to improve the welfare and preservation of all three hare species in Britain - the brown hare, mountain hare and Irish hare. Nationally, the brown hare has suffered a 75% reduction in numbers since the 1960s and verges on extinction in parts of Wales and the South-West. We encourage measures to reverse that trend such as Environmental Stewardship which can be taken up by farmers.

In spite of their decline, 390,000 brown hares are shot annually in Britain, mainly after pheasant shooting closes on 1 February. Around 10% of hares shot are wounded and escape to an uncertain fate. So the HPT opposes all bloodsports involving hares and seeks full protected species status for them. We have a Bill drafted which we will submit to MPs drawing the top six places in the forthcoming Private Members' Bill ballot. The HPT is not a charity and so totally free to lobby politically.

The HPT has a broad remit and promotes the constructive enjoyment of hares in the peace of the countryside, for example by photography and video production. We welcome new members who share our ideals.
