Kalaweit gibbons and Siamang conservation programme

Kalaweit is a dedicated to the protection of gibbon species in Indonesia. The gibbons of Indonesia face many threats towards their survival, particularly from habitat loss and collection for the pet trade.
Kalaweit runs centres Borneo and Sumatra; for the Agile gibbon and the Muller gibbon in central Kalimantan on the island of Borneo, and for the Siamang and the Agile Gibbon in West Sumatra. At present, Kalaweit takes care of 240 gibbons and Siamangs in Borneo and Sumatra.

Kalaweit Borneo

Kalaweit Borneo has 4 sites dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, reintroduction and welfare of confiscated gibbons, specifically the species native to Borneo: the Agile gibbon and the Muller's gibbon of which there are 3 sub-species.

The sites are:

 

Kalaweit Care Centre: Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan. This is the arrival centre and quarantine facility for gibbons and the main office and information/education centre for Kalaweit.

Hampapak Reserve (1500ha) which is the main release site for the Agile gibbons. This area is protected in collaboration with local people in addition to an area of 2500ha which is a nature reserve protected by Kalaweit where there are wild gibbons and orang-utans. We are stills seeking a suitable release site for the Mullers gibbons in northern Borneo.

Kalaweit Sanctuary and Rehabilitation Centre for Gibbons: situated on Hampapak Island in the Rugan River about 30km from Kalaweit Care Centre.

Mintin Island: The release site is an island of 100 hectares situated on the Kahayan River, 75.4m south of Palangka Raya on the road to Banjarmasin, This island is home to 2 pairs of agile gibbons as well as wild gibbons.

 

Kalaweit Sumatra.

Kalaweit Sumatra currently has 1 site dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, reintroduction and welfare of confiscated gibbons, specifically the species native to Sumatra: the Agile gibbon and the Siamang.

The Kalaweit Sumatra programme is located on a 1000 hectare Marak island off the west coast of Sumatra, 30 km from the town of Padang (Capital of West Sumatra province).

History of Kalaweit:

The Kalaweit program in Borneo was launched in 1999 and proved to be a successful immediately.
Fighting the illegal trade and illegal possession of gibbons by confiscating illegally trapped gibbons in cooperation with the Indonesian forestry department.
Habitat protection and awareness programs, especially via Kalaweit radio.
‘Kalaweit Radio Station' - became the most popular radio station in Palangkaraya and Sampit within one year!
A national agreement has been signed between the Indonesian forestry department and the Kalaweit program in the year 2004. Kalaweit can now protect and help gibbons throughout Indonesia.
