Wildlife at Risk (WAR)

Wildlife At Risk (WAR) is dedicated to protecting the biodiversity of Vietnam by combating the illegal wildlife trade, raising environmental awareness and promoting the conservation of endangered species and their habitats.

"Cat Tien soft release enclosure."The organisation was founded in 2001 and the Cu Chi Rescue Centre was offically opened in 2006. WAR was initailly launched  to help tackle the ever growing problem of the illegal pet trade in Vietnam, mostly targeting Saigon.

WAR now also provides the Forest Protection Department somewhere to take the confiscated wildlife instead of dumping back into the wild or selling it back to traders. Theirr main aim is to rehabilitate endangered vietnamese wildife and reintroduce it back into suitable habitats.

News about the work of WAR

  • Stage 2 expansion plan of Cu Chi Expansion - this means more enclosures to house more wildlife confiscated by local FPD officials & transferred to CCWRC.
  • New enclosures include: Otter exhibit, State of the art bear Exhibit & in the near future a new reptile Quarantine Facility.
  • New overseas relationships with Free the Bears - FTB (Australian based conservation organisation).
  • WAR & FTB have a new bear centre in Cat Tien National Park and a new Bear Rescue Facility in Hon Me, which could eventually house 200 bears.

Issues affecting Wildlife At Risk

As in all conservation work there are always going to be issues that slow down the process of protecting endangered wildlife & important habitats. Unfortunately in Vietnam there seem to be a lot deeming factors.
The main problems we face, as an organisation is the Trade & Consumption of endangered wildlife for the traditional Asian medicines.

There are hundreds of restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City that sell wildlife for consumption - please find a list on our website: http://www.wildlifeatrisk.org/

The other main issue that affects our work is poor legislation & enforcement within the country. This comes from a Government level, the law states it is illegal to keep wildlife, but if apply & are successfully granted a licence for specific wildlife you are able to house those species.

bear bile farming - 4000 bears kept in Vietnam

INTERESTING FACT: It is 100% illegal to milk bears for bile yet it still happens all over Vietnam, there are around 600 farmed bears kept in cramped cages in Ho Chi Minh City & around 4000 bears in Vietnam, yet this barbaric trade still thrives & the government is very aware of it & very tolerable of it.

If you feel passionate about helping to fight against this horrific abuse of wildlife please visit one of the websites listed below WAR's website to find out more information about how you can help.
