May 2011. The first osprey chick of the year is here, and it's a particularly special one because it's the earliest ever osprey chick to hatch on record in Britain. The chick hatched on Monday 9th May at the RSPB's Glaslyn osprey Date with Nature site, much to the excitement of RSPB staff and volunteers.

One of the breeding male ospreys at Rutland Water has not been seen for over a week, and it is thought he may have been shot. Click Rutland osprey.

Ospreys in Wales in 2011
The Glaslyn ospreys hatched the first osprey chick of 2011, and it's the earliest ever osprey chick to hatch on record in Britain.

A second pair have nested at the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust's Cors Dyfi Nature Reserve, and these birds have laid the first eggs here since 1604! They are incubating 3 eggs.

LADY OF THE LOCH

Lady, as she has become known, is a remarkable 25-year-old bird (Ospreys live on average just 8 years), that has raised 48 chicks so far, at Scottish Wildlife Trust's Loch of the Lowes wildlife reserve. This is her story.

More details

Loch Garten ospreys
The 'resident' pair at Loch Garten Osprey Centre, EJ and Odin, have produced 3 eggs and the first hatched out succesfully on 19th May. 2011 marks EJ's 9th season at the popular RSPB Scotland reserve having returned to the nesting site earlier than expected. She was joined a few weeks later by her partner Odin. Having prepared the nest and settled in to life in their summer home, the couple produced a clutch of eggs, the first arriving in the early hours of the 14th April. There has been trouble with an extra male osprey too.

Loch of the Lowes
'Lady' has laid 2 eggs this year, making an extraordinary total oof 60 in her lifetime. Peter Ferns, the Scottish Wildlife Trust's Loch of the Lowes Visitor Centre Manager, said: ‘We are overjoyed that our female breeding osprey has once again returned to the nest. This is the 21st consecutive year we have watched over this bird at Loch of the Lowes and it's certainly been one of the most dramatic.

Rutland ospreys
Two pairs of ospreys have successfully raised 3 chicks each at Rutland in 2010, and both pairs have reappeared safely in 2011. There are several more ospreys present around Rutland too.

Border ospreys - Chicks

Tweed Valley Ospreys have two chicks hatched out already. The first hatched on 15th May and the next one hatched the day after, with the 3rd eventually hatching on 20th May. This is the 20th chick for this pair since 2004.

The new camera is really wonderful and the live images are crystal clear with the sounds of the forest also relayed back to the centre.
