Wonderful image of a kingfisher with an elver - Taken by Steve Miller

Every year, an unexpected theme appears amongst the photos that we are sent. Last year it was all seals and deer, but in 2011 many of the best photos are of feeding, or feeding behaviour.  To see all the finalists in each section, click on the appropriate image below.

The standard of photos submitted to this years competition was fantastic - Given that our main aim is to encourage everyone to get outside and take photos, and that we offer no cash prize to the winners. We had some 2000 entrants to this years competition and these are the finalists - the pick of the bunch.  The winners will be announced next week.

Best of the rest - Highly commended - We published the highly commended images last week, again featuring a lot of feeding behaviour of one kind or another. From the kestrel eating a lizard and the waxwings to the heron with a huge fish and the frog with the comedy tongue (a worm). See all the highly commended photos.

PRIZES
The overall winner will win a bronze sculpture by David Mayer.  Additionally, Wildlife Extra will donate £300 to a UK wildlife charity to be nominated by the winner. Category winners will win OLYMPUS 8x42 EXPS I binoculars - Read more. Category runners-up will win a Footprint guide to 'Wildlife Travel'. Scroll down for more details.
