Animal ID in Buckinghamshire

Photographed in Buckinghamshire - What is it?

One of our readers spotted this animal swimming in a stream near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire. Our first impression was that it was probably a mink, but the photographer thought that was unlikely. He said that the animal was "too big for a mink and the wrong swimming action for otter, so what could it be? Only the slightest sound as it left the water on the opposite bank and away."

We have suggestions including a dog or a skunk, but what do you think?

Muskrat?

I think the animal swimming in a stream in Buckinghamshire is a Muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus), because it's very similar, almost identical, in the swimming action to one I photographed in the Ouse estuary (Normandy, France) 3 months ago, of which I enclose the picture.

I don't know why a muskrat can be in the middle of England but in these times of global exotic species invasion everything may happen ....

I think it looks like a beaver or even a dog?

Animal ID

I would have thought it was almost certainly a mink. I saw one once swimming towards me, and it looked very similar and also made no sound as it left the water. They're quite big, too!
