Blue tits have moved into an acoustic artwork in the Cotswold Water Park.

Home is where the Art is

June 2009. A family of discerning blue tits have taken up residence in a piece of man-made public art in the Cotswold Water Park - called Song Pole - despite the fact that there were many ideal natural nesting places nearby.

Song Pole, which was made from a 5m single piece of local oak was specifically designed to attract nesting birds but it was a gamble as to whether any would make the choice to move in.

Song Pole has a unique internal acoustic system, where people can stand at the base of the pole and listen to the sounds of the young blue tits calling for food.

Lesley Greene, Arts Consultant for the Cotswold Water Park Society who commissioned the work said: "Song Pole is a exciting ‘pilot' project commissioned to increase community appreciation and understanding of the biodiversity of the Water Park."

How to visit
Anyone who would like to (quietly!) visit the Song Pole can take a walk from Bridge Car Park on the Spine Road near South Cerney, along the old railway line towards Cricklade. The installation can be seen just south of the Cerney Wick Bridge.

It was created by artists group 'Liminal' who expressed delight that their work has found critical acclaim amongst the bird world.
