June 2007. Dorset Wildlife Trust is appealing to divers to take part in the first ever FISH WATCH survey at the Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve on Saturday and Sunday, 23rd & 24th June. The Trust aims to have 100 qualified divers taking part over the weekend to do a ‘snapshot’ survey of fish in the reserve.

Divers will be asked to look out for species such as Trigger fish, Rays, John Dory, Cuckoo wrasse, Seahorse and the rare Black-faced blenny. It is hoped that this will become an annual event and all dive clubs visiting Kimmeridge Bay on that weekend are welcome to join in.

Other attractions during the weekend include talks and displays about emergency re-compression, free mask and snorkel hire (deposit required) for use on the snorkelling trail; sale of marine life ID books and DVDs; and for non-divers, a crab’s-eye view of Kimmeridge Bay via the new underwater camera.

For more information contact the Fine Foundation Marine Centre on 01929 481044 or email kimmeridge@dorsetwildlife.co.uk

Fishwatch is part of CSV Action Earth, a campaign to get volunteers involved in projects of lasting benefit to the environment. Information gathered in the survey will help monitor changes in fish species as a result of climate change and other pressures on the marine environment.
