A leucistic opossum in Illinois

White opossum in Illinois

January 2011. Kimberly R said "I spotted and photographed this leucistic opossum in LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, near where where I live in St. Charles Illinois. I initially saw it about 50' off a trail. As I approached to photograph it went inside this tree and peered out at me. Very cute!"

Leucism (or Leukism)

Leucism is a very unusual condition whereby the pigmentation cells in an animal or bird fail to develop properly. This can result in unusual white patches appearing on the animal, or, more rarely, completely white creatures.

Our thanks to Kimberly for the image.

White Opossum

Have just seen a white (leucistic) opossum walking along the west bank of the Fox River in St. Charles, IL.

White opossum

I have a white opossum that frequents my back yard in Joliet, Illinois. In fact, I think it may have set up house under my deck. Really likes to chow down on the bird seed I put put for the birds and the peanuts I put out for the squirrels. From what I am reading this is quite an unusual thing to see-I am wondering if there is a zoo or wildlife facility that would like an animal like this..........hate to see this guy laying in the middle of the road somewhere in my neighborhood.
