Jaguars threatened by trade in Jaguar skins

Jaguars endangered

Tigers are in danger as poachers hunt them for their skins, bones and more, to sell for profit to misguided fools. Elephants, sharks and many other species are in similar peril, and now, if this news is anything to go by, the jaguar may join that list. Whilst still relatively numerous in South America (numbers have declined sharply due to loss of habitat), they are much rarer in Central America where probably just a couple of thousand at most survive, and poaching on this scale would see their numbers decline very quickly.

Wildlife smugglers arrested with jaguar skins
September 2011. Two men from Texas Elias Garcia Garcia and Maria Angela Plancarte were arrested as they crossed the border from Mexico into the United States at Brownsville, Texas.

According to the allegations, Garcia and Plancarte offered to sell jaguar skins to potential customers in Texas and by electronic means elsewhere. Additionally, the defendants made repeated road trips to South Florida, carrying jaguar skins to sell to Florida customers. On November 9, 2010, Garcia and Plancarte sold 2 jaguar pelts to undercover FWS agents in Texas for $3,000 cash and offered additional future sales of up to 10 jaguar skins. Garcia and Plancarte are also charged with a second sale of jaguar skins to undercover FWS agents in Homestead, Florida, resulting in a payment of $4,000 in cash, representing the purchase price of $3,000 and an additional $1,000 as a deposit against the future sale of up to 10 jaguar skins.

Jaguars threatened by trade in Jaguar skins

It's time to go after the buyers. Recommended penalty: Twice that for smuggling and/or selling - at the very minimum.
