Kruger Park full - visitors turned away.

08/01/2007 00:00:00
July 9th 2007. Following a few days recently where some visitors and tourists have been turned away at the gates of the Kruger National Park, we asked SAN Parks for clarification on their gate policy. They have replied as follows.

Letaba Rest Camp - Kruger National Park. Copyright South African Tourism.
The Kruger National Park has gate quotas at each gate that are determined by various factors but basically they are there to avoid overcrowding. What happens is each gate into the Park has a DAILY amount of people (different gates have different quotas) and when that quota is reached, the gate is effectively closed for the rest of that day. The only people who may enter then are those that have confirmed overnight bookings or who have made bookings as day visitors at that particular gate.

Normally, these quotas are not reached but it does happen that on certain days, particularly over long weekends and during the South African school holidays (as is currently the case), the quotas are reached and this was the case this weekend. Crocodile Bridge Entrance Gate reached its quota on both Saturday and Sunday, Phabeni Gate reached its quota on Sunday and Kruger Gate reached its quota on Sunday and those gates were closed on THOSE days.

SAN Parks have announced this policy on several occasions, and although it is rarely a problem, it can be at peak times, and it may become more of a problem in the future. If you want to go to the Kruger, make sure you book.
