Update - Three more rhinos killed on the Kruger
Since we first published this item, news has reached us that three more rhino carcasses have been found - Where does this stop?
Border fence to be recreated January 2012. The South African National Parks (SANParks) has announced that during patrols in various parts of the Kruger National Park (KNP), rangers found eight rhino carcasses with their horns missing in two different regions. Three carcasses were found in the Lower Sabie region and five in the Pretoriuskop section of the park.
Two poachers killed
In a follow-up anti-poaching operation in the eastern boundary of the Kruger National Park, Field Rangers came in contact with a group of suspected poachers. SANParks state that a shoot-out ensued between the Rangers and poachers, during which two suspected poachers were fatally wounded.
150 new rangers
South Africa's Environmental Affairs Minister, Edna Molewa, has announced that an additional 150 rangers will be deployed to the Kruger National Park in a bid to combat rhino poaching, to bolster the force of 500 Rangers already deployed.
Border fence
Molewa added that they were planning rebuild a 150-kilometre section of the fence that used to border the Kruger National Park along the border with Mozambique.
