Unusually coloured animals from the Luangwa

23/07/2008 23:20:21

One of our readers, Egil Droge, is a lucky sod. He works in the South Luangwa, so has plenty of opportunity to see unusual wildlife. He has noticed our growing collection of photos of unusually coloured birds and animals, so he has sent us a few images that he has taken recently.

White baboon

Leucistic baboon

Light coloured Impala

Meve's starling

Leucism (or Leukism)
Leucism is a very unusual condition whereby the pigmentation cells in an animal or bird fail to develop properly. This can result in unusual white patches appearing on the animal, or, more rarely, completely white creatures.

Our thanks to Egil Droge for these images.
