White buffalo calves on South African reserve10/05/2011 12:57:03
White buffalo calf at Jejane Nature Reserve. Credit Lynn Thijssen. May 2011. The following images of leucistic buffalo calves were sent to us by Jim Thomson, owner of Jejane Private Nature Reserve near Hoedspruit. Amazingly, the buffalo herd on the reserve has produced not 1, but 2 leucistic calves this year. The leucistic buffalo calves differ slightly - one is pure white and the other has black marks on the rump. Despite the reserve being a Big 5 reserve with the presence of lion, the calves are still safe with the herd. The reserve adjoins the Greater Kruger National Park conservation area. Leucism (or Leukism)Leucism is a very unusual condition whereby the pigmentation cells in an animal or bird fail to develop properly. This can result in unusual white patches appearing on the animal, or, more rarely, completely white creatures. Click here to see our gallery of albino and leucistic animals and birds. While I enjoy Wildlife Extra News I would like to see more news(there must be so many news stories to report) and less emphasis on leucistic(white) individual animals and birds on the 'News' page. Its got a bit of the 'Sideshow Curiosities' about it. Is it a case of (like mainstream tv channel news programmes) too much serious stuff will turn people off?
