Leucistic coot12/04/2011 11:52:14
Leucistic coot. Credit Roman Alsace-Lorraine. We have been sent this photo of a leucistic coot by Roman Alsace-Lorraine. Roman saw and photographed this bird in 2009 at Shortland Wetlands, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. Leucism is a very unusual condition whereby the pigmentation cells in an animal or bird fail to develop properly. This can result in unusual white patches appearing on the animal, or, more rarely, completely white creatures. Click here to see our gallery of albino and leucistic animals and birds. Our thanks to Roman for this image.
