Lion trophy ban needed to save Africa's lions01/11/2011 11:44:42
There are probably just 2,500 male lions left in Africa today. Articles this week about trophy hunting!October 2011. In Africa, lions have suffered catastrophic declines in the wild from an estimated 200,000 animals in the 1960's to fewer than 25,000 remaining today. In India, an isolated remnant has perhaps 400 individuals left. A Lionaid spokesman said "Once we secure this European ban, there will be enormous pressure put on the USA (importing over 60% of hunting trophies) and on CITES (the regulatory agency) to follow suit so that a worldwide ban will become an achievable objective." "We are working with the UK and EU Governments and have so far gained the cooperation of 8 MEPs and 29 MPs across all the main political parties. In November 2010 we achieved a debate on lions in the UK Parliament and have had two written questions about lion conservation tabled to the EU Parliament (with more pending). We are now in further discussions with both the former and current Shadow Undersecretaries of State for Environment, and well as Minister Richard Benyon, current Undersecretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs. " "We are delighted that we have now been invited by Catherine Bearder MEP to discuss options face to face with the European Commissioner for Environment in Brussels, the EU Intergroup for Animal Welfare and Conservation, and perhaps the President of the Parliament. All to gain the inevitable and predicted support of the other 26 EU member nations or at least a majority of them to achieve a lion trophy import ban across the European Union. " "Time is very much of the essence for lions, and we believe our progress over the past year has been greatly positive. "

You people are unbelievable heartless savages. How could you possibly think trophy hunting is good for animals? Educate yourself and look at the numbers. The loss of just one male lion is catastrophic. Trophy hunting is not a sport, it is something that cowards do to make them feel less pitiful. Pointing a gun at an animal who has absolutely no chance of protecting itself is the act of a spineless moron that does not deserve to be called human. I'd like to see these trophy hunters try to bring down a male lion with their bare hands and see how far they get. Let's even the odds a bit and make it more fair and see how popular trophy hunting is then. And what the heck does this have to do with the English and racism? Good grief get a clue! People like you are parasites that are sucking the life out of our planet and when there is nothing left it will be YOUR FAULT. Lions are beautiful animals that have been here longer than we have and deserve to live out their lives in peace and raise their young. They are not vain or greedy or jealous. They just want to live in peace. Humans could learn a thing or two from them.

Dear Vickki and 'Jacko', what plannet are you both on? Firstly, Vikki, Wlidlife extra have just given YOU population monitoring and research done by them on present findings BY a large contributor 'torphy hunting'. Many ethical people understand the way in which this is going will ultimately lead to the faster decline in lion population numbers IF things dont change soon.
I advice YOU to read some journals by Chris packer, a fantastic Lion Scientist who has spent his life dedicated to lion research, YOU may learn something. It is fantacy that torphy hunting, legal as it is, HELPS wildlife, as killing it destroys its purity and whole meaning to conservation. Organisations have NO CHOICE but to work with this and TRY and encourage ways of decreasing hunting, as many african have found that ACTUALLY keeping them alive for tourists that want to see them in there natural habitat is much more beneficial both for them and the wildlife.
Secondly, Jacko, what on earth has ANY of that got to do with Wildlife Extras piece on trophy hunting??? ARE YOU NOT APART OF THIS WORLD!!!??? Wake up yourself yeh! Decent people who give a damn are on here for the NEWS about conservation and wildlife not bizzare pointless rants lmao!
Do some self education and realsation on what going off the subject is about! Also, if we want YOUR opinion, we will no doubt ask for another laugh :D hit the road jacko.
Now to what i want to REALLY say is OMG!! shocked at male estimates, just completed my degree in Animal Management and Welfare and did my dissertation on african lions and leopards. I want to work with lions in conservation and rehab, and updates like this make me all the more determined to do it, because i care alot unlikee alot of the people out there, because it is trure, we are all apart of this world and if its not in people to wake up and realise whats IS actually happening then more fool them.
Im thankful the petition to the secretary of starte has been done to list the lion as endangered, is it going to ultimately be too late? no i hope not, nothing is hopeless.
As Will Travers said, 'If the Lion goes, what chance do other species have? If we dont care about the environment, wildlife and the world, then why shpuld we care what happens to us? We are a species, overpopulating, expanding, and growing. Thankfully some people are educated and are switched on like myself and many others like karen kendall :)
Keep it coming Wildlife Extra, Kez out lol ;) <3

Why is wildlife extra so anti-hunting? Controlled trophy hunting encourages local people to protect the wildlife. It employs and educates. It allows for population monitoring and research. The numbers taken by trophy hunters are tiny compared to the numbers that die due to shrinking habitat. If wildlife extra is interested in conservation, it needs to look at the bigger picture (which, by the way, includes a lot more invertebrates than are ever mentioned here...)

Must be honest, but the English had to be beaten out of every country that they colonised! Started racism in south africa, sent 22 000 south african woman and children to a concentration camp on St. Helena island of which more than a third died of hunger and disease, killed woman and children in large numbers for queen and country! And now you want to save the fucking lions.
Wake up you pompus assholes, if we wanted your opinions we would have given it to you!
