Probable Pomarine skua sighting of the coast of Galway by Jennifer Slevin

October 2011. Jennifer Slevin was canoeing off the coast of Galway in Kilkieran Bay when she spotted this bird, which actually landed on her sister-in-law's kayak and hitched a ride. We have been given a tentative ID as a Pomarine Skua.

Pomarine skuas breed in the far north of Eurasia and North America. They nest on Arctic tundra and islands, laying 2-3 olive-brown eggs in grass lined depressions. It is thought that they spend winters in more tropical climates, so this bird may have been on migration, or blown to Ireland by a storm. Either might also be a reason why it needed a rest on a kayak.

Do let us know if you can identify the species!
