Studland Bay - Site of International importance
The Seahorse Tust has been monitoring a number of sites around the UK, one of which is in Studland Bay in Dorset, which has turned out to be a site of International importance. Steve Trewhella, one of the survey co-ordinators, discovered Seahorses in Studland Bay in 2005.

Despite the longevity of the survey and the amount of knowledge we have already gained we need to know more about these very elusive animals and their secretive lives and Studland Bay provides a unique opportunity to do this.

Steve trewhella has recently taken this image, possibly the first taken in UK waters, shows a pair of spiney seahorses mating.

I am concerned about the hype about the sea horses and yachts apparent conflict. My first point the yachts have been anchoring in Studland bay for years, and yet the seahorses seem to be thriving. If there is a threat let’s work together. There is plenty of space in Studland bay for boats which want to stay for a while and sea horses. I agree with a no anchor zone, but when visiting last year it was not very clear. It would be better to have some permanent heavy duty moorings laid to take say 50 yachts, with anchoring to seaward, and a clearly defined no anchoring zone. Conservation is about preserving everything including traditions. Boats have used this anchorage for hundreds of years. Think outside the box and avoid conflict
