Red Kite in Somerset01/07/2009 22:22:11
Red kites are spreading out from Central Wales. Copyright Wildlife Extra We were both out fishing, along with Barn Owl, Cuckoo and Kingfisher, the kite left us and headed for Westhay Moor National Nature reserve direction. It was a fantastic sighting in our area, and we wonder if anyone else saw it in the area? How fantastic it would be for Somerset to have a Red Kite population

I have sighted a red kite today in my orchard at North Cadbury. Near Castle Carey. It had a wingspan of about 5 ft and appeared to be almost fully grown. It flew out over the tree tyops a few times before settling for a couple of minutes on the highest large branch. I tried to photograph it, zoomed in on it but it flew off just as I pressed the trigger.
I have seen such birds in a wetland before but did not know they inhabited this area. We are not far from the Somerset levels - so perhaps that is more its territory?

Single Red Kite around Sandford Batch around the woods at the Ski Centre. Got a few shots, but on a small compact camera. The Batch is home to several pairs of Buzzards and also a breeding pair of Peregrines at the quarry. Nice to think we may have Red Kites, but they don't seem to stay as yet.

I have just watched a lone kite get mobbed by a seagull in Wellington, somerset. It was flying at about 20 feet and I could clearly see the forked tail and distinct wing profile.

Hi just to let every one no I saw a pair of Red Kites this morning at the Canada Coombe end Of Roman Rd on Bleadon Hill. Stood and watch the pair for about 20 minutes untill I had to leave. When on my way home I went the same way to see if they were still around. I did see two birds but they were very high and I could not be sure of what they were. Has any body else seen these. I wondered if they were resident or just passing through

Interesting to read about the infrequent sightings of Red Kites in Somerset. Early yesterday morning (Wednesday 10/3/10), I had just arrived at the carpark at Westhay Moors Nature Reserve and heard a crow causing a commotion overhead. I looked up expecting to see it having a go at a Buzzard only to find to my surprise that it was not a Buzzard but a Red Kite. I grabbed my binoculars and watched it for about 10-12 minutes. A great start to the day!

I've lived in West Somerset for 36 years and only in the last three have I seen a Red Kite cruising the coastal cliffs between Porlock and Minehead. My last sighting was only 6 days ago.

We have seen a pair in the area of Silchester common where we live (on the Hampshire/Berkshire border) It is great to see them and know that this species is increasing in numbers in the UK.
