I am intrigued to find out what this dragonfly could possibly be. I found it in the middle of January on the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path near St Davids. Checking all the literature I have on dragonflies the nearest I can find is Vagrant Emperor. The brown eyes, yellow shading on the wing the yellow leading edge to the wing the colour of the pterostigma and the detail of the dark line running down the abdomen. The only feature that does'nt match is segment 2 which is blue in the book.

Vagrant Emperor Dragonflies

Vagrant Emperors are usually found in Africa and the Middle East,  but very occasionally turn up in Britain, and even more rarely in winter. Their very occasional sightings are usually associated with strong winds blowing from North Africa.

Our thanks to Pembrokeshire Birds for their permission to use the image and information.
