Japan urged to recall whaling fleet and abandon dying whale meat industry08/12/2011 11:04:37Set to kill more than 1,000 whales December 2011: Japan is being urged to recall its whaling fleet which has just left port for Antarctica to train its harpoons on about 1,000 whales.
According to Japanese media reports, the country's whaling fleet is en route to the pristine Southern Ocean Sanctuary to kill up to 935 minke whales and 50 endangered fin whales, in defiance of global opposition and several international laws. 'This industry is dying' Robbie Marsland, director of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW UK) said: ‘We are disappointed although not surprised that Japan's whaling fleet has once more set sail for Antarctica to slaughter more whales. The reality, though, is that the whaling industry is dying and this is its last gasp. The economics show that whaling is unprofitable and a bad policy for the Japanese people as well as for whales.' Whales take more than half an hour to die While whaling is uneconomic, whale-watching offers a humane and profitable alternative to the cruelty of whaling, generating around US$2.1 billion annually for coastal communities. According to recent media reports the Australian Customs ship Ocean Protector, docked in Hobart, may be preparing to sail to the Southern Ocean to monitor the whaling season. During the last season of Southern Ocean whaling, the Japanese fleet headed back to port early with less than half of its self-allocated catch quota following pressure from many fronts. The new documentary Hunt for the Whalers, following EIA undercover investigators in Iceland and Japan, makes its UK premiere on Nat Geo Wild this Thursday 15/12/11. This shows that the whaling industry is far from stopping. In fact their efforts to keep it going with total disregard for IWC regulations will work in the long run. We must not let this happen. Save the Whales Save the Earth.

I agree with the post above, they preach to the world that they are kind and civilised, and yet they continue to do these atrocities, and the reason for that is..... TRADITION. Just because their great great forefathers went out and butchered innocent creatures (at a time mind you when the human population was considerably less) they believe that it is only right to continue this tradition, and it is ridiculous. They say that it is for scientific purposes, then why do they continue to serve whale meat in schools? Why, because they are morons who don't deserve to call themselves a part of this earth and believe that they are truly above everyone else. Well their not, and sooner or later they will be accounted for and made to pay for their mistakes. DUMBA**ES

How can the Japanese call themselves a civilised society while they still continue whaling? In any case, most whalemeat is so toxic, as whales are at the top of the food chain and we humans are such polluting creatures, that it cannot be safely consumed. So what is the point of all this slaughter?
