White impala seen in South Africa

June 2011.  These images were sent to us by Elsabé Potgieter. They were taken on Mapongubwe Game Reserve in South Africa's Limpopo Province, near the borders of Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. This impala's lack of pigmentation may be the result of leucism (see below). This isn't the first white impala that Wildlife Extra has been made aware of. In 2008 we were sent photos of a white impala in South Africa - We wonder if it was the same animal?

Leucism (or Leukism)
Leucism is a very unusual condition whereby the pigmentation cells in an animal or bird fail to develop properly. This can result in unusual white patches appearing on the animal, or, more rarely, completely white creatures.

Our thanks to Elsabé Potgieter for these images
