Akaroa Harbour: Hectors dolphins
Akaroa Harbour is the extraordinary remains of an extinct volcano that has formed a 13 kms long inlet in a long headland, if that makes sense. The inlet has been formed by the caldera of the volcano connecting to the sea, so there are some fantastic rock formations and 1000 foot high cliffs. For most people the highlight is a chance to swim with the dolphins.
Highlights: Hector's dolphins, occasional Orca, fur seals, white-flippered blue penguins (The world's smallest penguin), yellow-eyed penguins, as many as 5 different species of cormorant and many other sea birds including albatross..
Location: The town of Akaroa lies some 54 kilometres from Christchurch on the 75. There are several companies offering cruises to see the wildlife, and dolphin swims.
