Kapiti Island Nature Reserve
The west coast immediately north of Wellington is known for its spectacular sea views, glorious sunsets and untouched wilderness environments. Offshore is Kapiti Island, a marine and wildlife sanctuary where you can enjoy the antics of many unusual birds. There’s a lodge on the island for overnight stays – the dawn chorus is amazing. Photographer: Ian Trafford (www.iantraffordphotos.com).
Highlights: Hihi, takahe, kokako, brown teal, stitchbirds, and saddleback, miromiro, piwakawaka, ruru, weka, and Brown and Little Spotted Kiwi.

Access and facilities: Overnight stays are banned. You must have a permit to visit, and you can only visit with one of the licensed operators. Numbers are limited so it is a very good idea to book ahead.
