UK wildlife photography competition 2010 winner & shortlist - Birds

photography/2010 comp finalists/AustinThomas_Blue-Tit-in-flight_cx

Winner - Blue tit landing by Austin Thomas: Blue tits are common birds therefore it has to be an absolute stunner to win a bird category with one. This is. Background is brilliant, the rain a bonus and at just the right angle. The bird is caught in that moment as its feet are stretched before landing and the catch light is immaculate. This did not happen by chance,

Runner Up - Reed Warbler by Don Hooper: Even if you did not know what bird this is the setting explains it. They are difficult birds to track down as they are often obscured, but not only has the photographer found it in good light he has also lowered the shutter speed to turn a good shot into a much more arty study of the bird with the deep green reeds transformed into shimmering green veils.

There are several shots that we argued about for second place, Peter Denness' beautiful duckling, Damian Waters exhaling pheasant, Austin Thomas' shot of a Robin and Paul Miguel's shot of 2 foxes stalking a heron. But we felt that, for degree of difficulty and subject, Don Hooper's glimpse of a Reed warbler framed by waving reeds would probably be the hardest to reproduce.

The bird section is always the most competitive, and we had dozens of images that were there or there abouts, but our job is to pick the very best few.
