Antarctic Wildlife
A visitor's guide to the wildlife of the Antarctic Peninsula, Drake Passage and Beagle Channel.
Written by James Lowen - Published by Wildguides
Lowen's guide to the wildlife of the Antarctic Peninsula is specifically designed for anyone travelling from Ushuaia to the Antarctic and who has even the slightest interest in wildlife. All the species that you are likely to see are described, with photographs for easy ID (Good luck with your petrels though), strong descrptions and notes on habits, rarity and distribution, though there are no distribution maps - and we like maps.
There are also useful chapters/tips on Antarctic cruising, and how to choose the trip for you, wildlife photography in the Antarctic (very basic) and where you might see what.
If you are travelling to the Antarctic Peninsula from Ushuaia, across the Drake Passage (Drake Lake if it is calm - rarely, Drake shake more normally.) this book will cover the wildlife you can expect to see; birds, seals, whales and dolphins. If you are travelling to other parts of the Antarctic, or you want to get into more detail, we recommend Hadoram Shirihai's fantastic "Complete Guide to Antarctic Wildlife". (Much larger, heavier and more expensive.)
