Australian Wildlife - Bradt

reviews/reviews_2010/bradt_australia

Australian Wildlife - Bradt Publishing. By Stella Martin

Australia must rank alongside Madagascar for the quantity of endemic and weird species. It is a vast country with huge variations; best known for its deserts and Great Barrier Reef, it also has tropical rainforests, several ranges of snowy mountains, wetlands, swamps, mangroves and great marine ecosystems. This is a good generalist book, covering the most iconic and most likely to be seen species across the continent, though if you are a keen diver or birder, you will want to get more specialist books to cover your subject.

There are lots of marsupials and birds in here, but also reptiles and amphibians, insects and bugs, and some whales and fishes too. There are also different chapters on the various habitats, and when and where to go, as well as little about relevant history and geology.

Stella Martin grew up in Northern Ireland, but emigrated to Australia in 1990. She worked for the Queensland Parks and Wildlife service for many years.
