Wildlife Photographer - Chris Gomersall

reviews/reviews_2010/wildlife-photographer-gomersall A course in creative photography by Chris Gomersall
Gomersall is best known for his photographs of British birds, but he has travelled all over the world and photographed mammals, butterflies, sea life and landscapes too.

The book is stuffed with many of Chris' best photos, but that is not the reason to buy it. Chris has imparted many of his secrets and does his best to guide the reader in the skills needed to take the best photos.

Tips
Several key aspects to successful wildlife photography don't involve a camera at all.

Fieldcraft - The more you understand about the world around you, the easier it is to photograph it. Much of this cannot be learned from books, but purely through experience, so starting young is a great advantage! Many of the best photographs take a great deal of planning and work. Up before dawn and spending several hours lying motionless in a hide are often the necessary prerequisite to a great photo.

Animal behaviour - Understand animal behaviour is another key. What does your prey eat and when does it eat it? Where do they nest or den? What time of day are they most active? How close will they let you get?

There is a great deal about the actual techniques and mechanics of photography too, and the second half of the book is dedicated to case studies where Gomersall reveals how he took twenty-four of his best images.

RRP £25
