Growing Barn owls in my garden
Written by Paul Hackney - Published by Whittles.
Paul Hackney became hooked on nature as a youngster living in the Lake District in the 1950's (After 'escaping' from Manchester) and has spent much of his life since working actively on conservation, and particularly with Barn owls. In his easy writing style, he covers his growing fascination with nature as a youngster, which gradullay transmogrifies into a passion for barn owls. He has bred and released some 250 of these birds himself, and thinks and hopes he is responsible for a small part of their recovery across Britain.
Hackney relays his love affair with Barn owls, the story of how he became so involved with them, the history of the red tape put in place by the government, and the occassional avoidance thereof. He manages to include Pyramus and Thisbe, Basil and Sybil, Gerald Durrell and a Vauxhall Cavalier into his tale.
One of the better books of its genre.
