152 Wild things to do

reviews/Wild-Things

152 Wild things to do is a lovely idea, and perfectly written for children who were 6 years old in 1950. 152 Wild things, displays 2 common faults in children's books and activity guides.

1. Not all children are 6 years old.
2. It is a great ideal, but we don't live in the 1950's now. Watching a spider spin a web, watching orchids bloom, mulching your garden (yes, really this is suggested), clean up your coastline, make elderflower cordial, make a den in the woods, admire a waterfall, walk barefoot, make a bark rubbing, plant a hedgerow.

It makes you wonder if the author, Helen Babbs, has had any children in the last 30 years. This is the sort of book a grandmother would buy a 10 year old as it is wholesome and educational, and the 10 year old would probably never open it, let alone put anything into action as a result.

However, despite the attraction of the small screen, there are still some youngsters that would enjoy some of the book, so if you know some younger children who love the idea of the famous five, this book might just work for them.
