Central Balkan National Park (Bulgaria)
Central Balkan National Park lies in the highest section of the Stara Planina Mountains. There are 670 km of hiking paths and snowshoe and crosscountry trails with awe-inspiring views of deep caves, steep canyons, high waterfalls and sweeping beech trees forests with an average age of 111 years. The most famous of them, the international trekking route E-3 leads from the Atlantic Ocean to the Black Sea. Visitors can also explore the park on horseback or mountain bike.
Wildlife: The park is a haven for bird wartchers: There are 123 bird species, among them imperial and golden eagle, white-backed woodpecker, eagle owl, and red-breasted flycatcher. The park is also home to bears, wolves , pine martens, otters, various bat species and a variety of endangered invertebrates.
Location and Access: Take the road from Sofia via Kazanlak or via Varna. There are also public buses and trains from Sofia to the park region.
