New (and only) National Park created in Belgium.
Hoge Kempen National Park
The ‘Hoge Kempen’-plateau was created during the ice ages, when rocks and stones from the Ardennes were left by the river Maas (Meuse). 100-metre high ‘peaks’ offer spectacular views of the ‘Maas’ river valley and the ‘Hoge Kempen’-plateau. It is the only region in Flanders where you can find so many different types of rocks in the soil. Other features of the Hoge Kempen National Park include pine forests, heather and stretches of water with species including European Nightjar, Black Woodpecker, Smooth snake and Silver-Studded Blue Butterfly.
