Fordham Hall Estate

uk/uk_2010/Fordham_hall_bat_boxes Set in the agricultural landscape of the Colne valley, Fordham Hall estate, near Colchester, Essex, covers approximately 200ha (505 acres) of gently sloping arable land which has been cultivated for centuries. The land which almost surrounds the village of Fordham is now the site of a major woodland creation scheme.

A network of 20km of un-surfaced paths has been created across the site providing access for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Ancient hedgerows, marshland, streams and ponds attract wildlife and on the river bank otters can sometimes be seen. Recently the Trust has introduced water voles, relocated from the Olympic site. Two mature stands of cricket bat willow, traditionally used for that purpose, are home to birds and bats.

Over time, the conversion of the site to native woodland and grassland will transform the local landscape and enrich its potential for both people and wildlife.
