A small lake, Llyn Rhos-du, occurs at the landward side of the dunes near Pen-lon. A hide provides opportunity to watch tufted duck, wigeon, heron and many other birds. The mudflats support important wintering populations of pintail, wigeon, teal, redshank, dunlin. The reserve contains an outstanding flora, interesting lichen and moss communities and a wealth of invertebrates. The intertidal mudflats and saltmarshes are important wintering grounds for waders and wildfowl regularly supporting over one per cent of the British population of Pintail.
