Pwll-y-Wrach Nature Reserve

Pwll-y-Wrach is one of the prettiest nature reserves in the area. A delightful, peaceful, wooded valley at the foot of the Black Mountains fed by a waterfall that drops some 20 feet into the 'Witches Pool' , just a few miles south of Hay on Wye. There is a small footpath around the reserve and some of the reserve is accessible to wheelchair users.

The woodland is particularly beautiful in early spring when white patches of wood anemones merge with a yellow carpet of lesser celandines. In late spring bluebells fleck the woodland floor with shimmering blue and the white flowers of wild garlic give the air a pungent smell.

Wildlife highlights: Woodland birds, and Wildlife Extra saw a couple of stoats when we visited.

Location: From the junction in the centre of Talgarth, with the Tourist Information Centre on your right, turn right. The road passes over the River Ennig and then take the severe left turn which leads into Bell Street. After just 20 metres, turn left opposite the Bell Hotel and follow the minor road up hill for 1.5 miles. A short distance after the last houses of Talgarth, the small reserve car park is on the right.
