Allt Mhuic Butterfly Reserve

Allt Mhuic is an area of grassland, moorland and native woodland between two large conifer plantations on the north side of Loch Arkaig. Butterfly Conservation run the reserve in conjunction with the Forestry Commission Scotland.

Butterfly highlights: Chequered Skipper, Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary , Dark Green Fritillary, Large Heath, Small Heath, Common Blue, Green Hairstreak, Green-veined White, Meadow Brown, Peacock, Red Admiral, Scotch Argus, Speckled Wood.

Moths: Argent and Sable, grey Scalloped Bar, Narrowbordered Bee Hawk-moth.

Birds: Dippers breed on the burn, while chats and flycatchers frequent the open woodland. Golden Eagle, Osprey and divers are possibilities.

Other wildlife: The area's special dragonfly, the Azure Hawker, can be found in the wet flushes on the lower slopes. Otter & Pine Marten can be found here.

Location: The reserve is on the north shore of Loch Arkaig, 20 miles due north of Fort William, along a narrow single-track road six miles west of Clunes.
