Balloo Wetland Reserve
Balloo Wetland Reserve has been recently acquired by Ulster Wildlife Trust and much hard work has been put into transforming this former waste ground into a wildlife haven. This 7.75 acre reserve consists of two large ponds, a bird hide, circular boardwalk path which is pram and wheelchair friendly and a picnic area. The bird hide here is a curved, ‘open plan' design and offers views of numerous wildfowl. There is a sense of anticipation at the reserve as wildlife return to the restored habitat - what might be sighted next? Glimpses of kingfisher over the pools are just the beginning.
Balloo Nature Reserve is made up of two nature reserves on either side of the Balloo Road in Bangor - Balloo Wetland and Balloo Woodland.
Highlights: In the ponds, redshank, teal, lapwing and snipe are a common sight and soon frogs and newts will be spawning. Flocks of tits, finches and dunnock flitting along the trees are a particular treat. Ducks and geese you might spot kingfishers, dragonflies and damselflies.
Location: On the southern edge of Bangor, Co Down, just off the A21.
Grid reference: NW633333
Access: Open all year round, and wheelchair access is available. Admission is free
