Bath Peregrine falcons
The peregrine falcons that live on Saint John's Church in Bath city centre have claimed the British record for the earliest breeding peregrines in the UK in 2011. By March 18th they'd laid four eggs, beating all other peregrines by a fortnight.
"To be able to show people the fastest animal on the planet on my doorstep is amazing," said Anja Bradley, Bath's RSPB Information Officer, "capable of diving at 247 mph these creatures fire the imaginations of children and adults alike. The other day I watched as the male caught a woodpigeon in flight. It was incredible!"
Matt Brierley, RSPB's People Engagement Officer for Somerset added, "hats off to the Hawk and Owl Trust for putting up a nest box that has enabled these peregrines to become city slickers, Saint John's Church for allowing it, and Bath Council for supporting us in showing people these amazing birds.
"If you've never seen a peregrine, seize the day and join a watch. These days should be great for families! We will be running more watches during 2011 and we'd welcome volunteers to come along and help us."
