Begwns
The Begwns are a beautiful, and very rarely visited, heath common with glorious 3600 views, including across to Hay Bluff and the Black Mountains. The undulating common is mostly covered with heather, sheep grazed grass and bracken, but does have a small lake in one corner and a couple of ponds too.
Wildlife highlights: Prominent birdlife includes Red kites and buzzards, and we saw a small flock of Golden plover on our last visit. Brown hares can be seen; a range of heathland butterflies and several species of dragonfly and damselfly around the lake.
Location. Head to Clyro on the A438, and turn west at Clyro (signposted Painscastle). After a mile or two, turn left (brown sign to The Begwns) and follow the road around the right, over a cattle grid, and park on the heath. There is also a very minor road across the middle of the heath.
