Blackditch & Murrough Wetlands, Co. Wicklow
Blackditch & Murrough contains important fen habitats, as well as wet grasslands and birch woodland which are part of the larger Murrough Wetlands, a coastal wetland complex. The fen and wet grassland areas are seasonally flooded and open pool areas are a permanent feature
Highlights: Little Egrets all year round. Willow and Sedge Warbler, Swallows and Swifts all visit in summer, and in autumn Greenfinch, Chaffinch, Linnet and Goldfinch are seen regularly. Short-eared Owls and Kingfishers also appear at this time along with wintering geese and swans.
14 species of dragonfly and 15 species of butterfly have been recorded.
Location and access: 2 km east of Newcastle, south of Greystones on the east coast of County Wicklow. Park at the coastal car park, (turn to the coast near the Castle Inn, Newcastle) and the grasslands can be viewed from the path above the beach.
Restricted access. Access to the reserve itself is at present limited to supervised open days and school visits. Contact BirdWatch Ireland for event details. A number of hides and a circular path system are planned.
