Blows Downs Nature Reserve
Blow's Downs chalk hills are in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and are a great place for birds and flowers. The hills are steep, which has allowed the reserve to maintain a grassland rich in wildlife and flowers with areas with some scrub that gives shelter for birds and insects. It is a good spot for birds during spring and autumn migrations.
In spring and autumn visitors are attracted by the regular passing of migrant birds, feeding up before heading off once again on their way to their nesting, or wintering grounds.
Wildlife highlights: Wheatear, stonechat, whinchat, nuthatch, red-backed shrike, green and greater spotted woodpecker and ring ouzel can all be seen.
Location: The reserve is between Luton and Dunstable. Head west from Luton on the A5065 towards Dunstable, cross over the M1, then after three quarters of a mile take the first exit at the roundabout. Park with care on the road verge. The entrance is adjacent. Or walk half a mile from Dunstable centre to alternative west entrance at end of Half Moon Lane off the A5.
Blow's Downs is managed by the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Peterborough Wildlife Trust
