Bromyard Downs

uk/UK_reserves/bromyard_downs_wx

Bromyard Downs contains 262 acres of wild meadows that are grazed by one small flock of sheep, and the grass is cut for hay in the summer. Some of the Downs were ploughed during the Second World War to grow crops, but much has not been cultivated for centuries. The Downs are bordered at the top by the National Trust owned Warren Woods, a patch of old broad leafed woodland. The downs are bathed in wild flowers and orchids in summer, and there are plenty of butterflies around. There are fine views across Herefordshire.

Wildlife highlights: Large skipper, marbled white, green hairstreak are amongst the butterflies. Plenty of birds that you would expect to see in downland and woodland.

Location and access: The Bromyard Downs lie in the hills just to the west of Bromyard, off the B4203 next to the Royal Oak Inn.

Facilities: There is a car park near the pub, which is a good spot for lunches.
