Caen Hill locks

uk/UK_reserves/caen_hill_lock_pools

This extraordinary feat of engineering has proved a great boon to wildlife. The flight of 16 successive locks is one of the most impressive on the UK's waterways, but the major contribution to wildlife is the 16 accompanying pools, each one a haven for wildlife, especially water birds and dragonflies. The locks were built by 1810, but became derelict after WWII, and were restored at the beginning of the 21st century.

Wildlife highlights: Water voles, grass snakes, dragonflies and damselflies, bats and a variety of wetland birds.

Facilities: There is a car park (Pay and display) and a cafe at the top of the locks.

Location: On the A365 west of Devizes.
