Cannock Forest

Cannock Forest sits on Cannock Chase, the smallest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on mainland Britain.

Cannock Chase is best known for its open heathland and pine forest and its mining and military history which stretches back several hundred years and still effects how the land is managed today.

 
Birds
 
In the pine forests you might see crossbills, siskins, goshhawks, goldcrest, long tailed tits amongst others. The broadleafed woodland holds woodpeckers, nuthatches, whitethroats, jays and others. The nationaly rare heathland areas are ideal for the elusive nightjar, woodlarks, buzzards and plenty more.
Mammals
 
The wide range of habitats shelter Red, Fallow and Roe deer, badger, fox, hare, stoat, weasel, hedgehog and many more.
 
Reptiles and amphibians
 

Grass snakes, adders, newts and lizards are all found at Cannock. The purpose built lagoon pools and basking areas provide the ideal habitats for many ground dwelling species.

Insects
 
Best known for rare Small pearl-bordered fritillary butterflies. There is work going on to improve the habitat for these beautiful insects
 
Location
 
Cannock Chase lies between Stafford, Cannock and Rugeley. Cannock Forest is disected by several roads including the A460 and A513.
