Cape Wrath -
Scotland's most north westerly point can only be reached by a bus journey of about 11 miles through wild unspoiled scenery. On the journey you will see some of Britain's highest cliffs, seabirds, wildlife, seals and the spectacular Cape Wrath Lighthouse.
Slight delays can be expected at peak times and during MOD exercises, weather Permitting.
British mainland's highest cliffs: The Clo Mor cliffs are the highest cliffs on the British Mainland with a drop of 620 feet. Just to the east there is a virtual sheer drop of 900 feet. These torridonian Sandstone cliffs area is a major breeding site for sea birds in the United Kingdom.
Wildlife highlights: Common seals, Red deer (very common), Golden eagle, ptarmigan, crossbill, crested tit, greenshank. Fulmars, kittiwakes, puffins & shags breed on the cliffs at Cape Wrath during the summer months. Red throated divers & Black throated divers can be seen on various lochs around Cape Wrath.
How to get there: First take a ferry across the Kyle of Durness which takes approximately a quarter of an hour. From there you can catch a minibus (takes approximately half an hour each way). During the crossing you are likely to see Common seals.
Bombing range: A large area of Cape Wrath is used as an MOD bombing and targeting range. Although access is allowed to Cape Wrath there are restrictions when exercises are taking place. All possible measures are taken to keep interference with the normal everyday activities of people living and working in the area to a minimum and the ranges are only activated on days when noise and vibrations are estimated below certain levels. The MoD has an ongoing conservation programme with the aim of monitoring the effect of bombing on the seabirds.
Cafe: Britain's most remote cafe opened here recently (2009).
