Capel Island & Knockadoon Head
Knockadoon is a headland on the western tip of Youghal Bay, situated on the east Cork coast, and Capel Island lies about 1 mile off shore.
Highlights: The headland is a good sea-watching point but is renowned for its migrant birds, including which rare migrants such as Pied Wheatear and Sardinian Warbler. Scarce migrants have included Hoopoe, Lapland Bunting, Yellow-browed Warbler, Pied Flycatcher, Black Redstart (the latter occasionally in large numbers). The island hosts Chough, Peregrine and a colony of Cormorants.
Location: About 12km south of Youghal (and south of Ballymacoda)
Viewing & Access: A dirt track leads around the headland to the tip. Access to the island is by written permission from BirdWatch Ireland only
