Carmel National Nature Reserve
The reserve was designated a Special Area of Conservation several years ago - one of the highest levels of protection afforded wildlife sites. It is also a National Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest. The Grasslands Trust manages over 50 hectares of the NNR and has bought land around the site to extend and protect it. With a generous grant from the Welsh Assembly's Aggregates Levy Fund Scheme in 2005, they have spent the last three years restoring extensive areas of the grassland at Carmel. This has involved installing over 3000m of cattle proof fencing and water troughs so the site can be properly grazed; improving visitor access by installing kissing gates, a visitor car-park, interpretation and signs and new pathways and trails.
Highlights: Brown hare, lapwing, skylark and barn owl.
Location: Llandeilo, Carmathenshire, SA14 7TP.
Grid reference: SN591164
