Clapton Moor Nature Reserve

uk/uk_wildlife/gigrin_buzzard_wx

Clapton Moor is characteristic of the north Somerset Levels. Networked with species-rich ditches, the moor is important for its breeding waders and wintering wildfowl. The grassland areas are kept wet by water level control structures in the ditches, allowing the site to maintain a high water table during the summer months. During the winter the reserve is deliberately flooded to attract flocks of wildfowl and waders.

Wildlife highlights: Snipe, redshank, lapwing, buzzard, peregrine, hobby (often chasing some of the many swallows, martins and swifts that feed over the grassland) & barn owls. Look out for hairy dragonfly and ruddy darter.

Location: From Portishead take the B3124 towards Clevedon and turn left into Clapton Lane at the roundabout by Gordano School. In the village of Clapton-in-Gordano take the second road on the right and the Black Horse pub is 300 metres on the right. Park carefully in Wood Lane opposite the pub entrance.
